Houston – Reignition 2020

Houston, we have lift off in 2020

This album was part of that Midwest Rock rabbit hole I fell through that began with HUM, followed by Shiner who both subsequently toured together in the late 90s (and I caught three of their California dates). Overhead was introduced by way of Shiner having Houston as support with Glory for Champions. When this tour was announced, I immediately scoured the ‘nets at the time for anything I could find on this mysterious Minneapolis band. When it first started mp3.com (not what it is now) had 4 of their songs in mp3 format and the one that got stuck on me was “Bender.” What a hell of a ride that was, a song that has a rip roaring up-tempo song that “bends” into a spacier rotovibed version of itself. 1st of the discography: *Overhead*

The Ugly Tree EP slipped under my radar but it was their sophomore effort, “Head Like a Road Map” that they toured in heavy rotation in the states. I caught their show in Dallas and Austin, TX with Shiner touring “The Egg” (performing that album in its entirety). They released this album during this tour as a slip/cardboard case and a formal silver CD which came out later. I will update the Ugly Tree EP another time to have 320mp3s as I have to track down my copy of the burned CD from Jesse Mraz (ex-manager).

I think I’m doing this in order, hopefully. Next up is their B-sides and covers release that had an issue during the mastering of this album. According to Halland it was messed up during this process and came out the way it did on silver CDs. There are only 3 songs from this collection that were released on other CDs (Split with the Dames and Ugly Tree EP) that can be heard better than on this particular release. NOTE: I did a sort of remaster of the silver recording to boost the quality, however some of the songs were already pushing the limit of quality and not noticeable audible difference.

The last full length, a monster of an album with fewer segues! I saw them the most during this touring cycle. However, I had a few minidiscs that never recorded properly or were “bad discs” and suffered from non-existence from these shows. Nonetheless, there were a few that made it. Enjoy this banger of an album!

These will be re-done on my site since these are older rips. I will write a formal post here when they’re up and ready to download. Trainwreck 2 and Corner Song were crowd favorites at shows. The Journey cover however don’t think was ever performed live since this one is a multi-tracked banger of a song that Houston made their own (Ohms featured just Allen Epley and Jason Gerken contributing a track).
