The Archivist Volumes: Houston 3

Freshly ripped Houston oldies but oldies, 2 silvers (CDs that were manufactured) and 2 CDRs. I wanted to update the server with higher quality versions than what was uploaded in October 2012. I didn’t check the audio on these, but if you hear any discrepancies let me know. These CDs are roughly 20 years old and may not get read for another decade or 2. I wanted to upload these now cause y’know we all have some time to kill.

CDR#1 I acquired the Dames split either at the first time I saw Houston live (with Shiner doing the Egg) when I flew out to Dallas, TX (Curtain Club) then drove to Austin, TX (Emo’s) in 2001. This was the trip where I got my 1st speeding ticket in a construction zone too, what also added to the hurt was… did I mention I was in Texas? Oh yeah… I got quite inebriated at the Austin show so I slept off the side of the highway in my rental car at the time. I remember I was trying to take pictures of Houston and drunkenly accosting another fan who didn’t care and just wanted to see Shiner. Yeah, I told him off and luckily it didn’t end in fisticuffs at least, I prolly would’ve gotten the glass jaw test cause I was so damn drunk. Oh, the tracks, “If you were a person” is prolly my favorite track ever by the band, but I never saw them play it live unfortunately. The beginning of this version and the ending of “She” was a modified “Speak N’ Spell” that was rewired, pre-circuit bending… maybe? “She” was an original written by The Sundays and boy did Houston give it a twang!

CDR#2 Jesse Mraz was Houston’s manager and I ended up crashing at his place when Houston was in town to play a show. I noticed he had the Ugly Tree EP and didn’t have a duplicate CD, so I duped his CD on his computer to acquire a good version of “You in the Room.” Luckily he had a spare CDR cause at the time that was a thing that us old folks did.

Silver CD#1 The Socomtonar Collection Volume 1– I believe Hieu Nguyen of Ascetic Records mailed this out to me from St. Louis… or it was acquired at a show, memory fades. But “Trainwreck 2” is a blazing track, with changes, upper cuts, and hooks for days. “The Corner Song” also is a great song as well. Both tunes became staples in their live set.

Silver CD#2 would be the final CD I bought (at the Shiner Finale in KCMO at the Madrid) to complete the collection, No Escape – A Tribute to Journey. What a fine reconstruction of a classic song–Houston executes their rearrangements of covers so very cleverly and the ending is so damn heavy.

Links are down on most of your Houston pages, to my great sadness. Great site though!
