The Archivist Volumes: Shiner

Shiner – The show must go on: re-dos, I’m re-doing my minidisc shows and re-eq’ing them for loudness.

11/2/01 @ Emo’s Austin, TX

Ahh, the flood of memories! I flew out to Dallas and had a rental car while there. I stayed with my mom’s/step-dad’s co-worker in Dallas and drove to Austin for the 2nd show. Shiner played Emo’s in Austin and that venue was really cool. Big, big place and I had a few beers that night, remember kiddies, this was ~8 years ago!!! I had a blast, but got my 1st speeding ticket ever AND it was in a construction zone. The officer was nice enough to tack off the actual speed. I was also late for my flight so I had to pay an extra fee for that. This was one of my more expensive trips out of state for these shows… BTW, for all you “The Egg” fans, this is it!!! In its entirety!

This was a majestic show, two of my favorite bands on 1 bill. The headliner, Shiner, played a full hour set and closed with their version of My Bloody Valentine’s “Only Shallow.” Amazing show, I can listen to this and remember what a great night it was. A lot of my buddies were there, it was fantastic sharing that experience with good friends!

Hey, so everything looks good, everything except for these 3 Shiner shows. The 3 and only 3 on this page; The Archivist Volumes: Shiner. Everything is good on the second one; The Archivist Volumes: Shiner 2. That goes for all the others.

Quick question: Will your master recording for The Life and Times at Casbah’s in 2003 ever see the light of day?

  2. Jody says:

So I’m not really sure why I said 3 shows in the last text. It’s the 2 shows; 11/2/01 @ Emo’s Austin, TX in MP3, and 05/19/02 @ Spaceland, Silverlake, CA in MP3 and AAC. Those are the only ones that need fixing.

Hey Jody, sorry for the late response, but thanks for the heads up. Much appreciated!

No problem man! A lot of the music that I have been listening to lately I got from you, and so if it weren’t for you putting them up for download I would of never found them elsewhere. So thanks a ton for all your doing on here, and have been doing! I’ve been wondering if you’ll be putting up any other Shiner shows? If I ever find something that I think you don’t have, I’ll be sure to let you know.

Jody, I don’t think I have anymore Shiner shows, all tapped out. I know there are tapers in other cities but I just don’t know if they have taped or have fans like us to scour through the ‘net for. I have a friend named Shane Blindt who films, he’s used my HUM audio for one of his videos. He filmed a Starless release show which is on youtube, however it’s just one giant long video of the entire set.

  6. Jody says:

Yeah, he has some great videos up on Youtube for Hum, Shiner, and Houston. I’ve downloaded all of them.

I’m sorry for bugging you all the time about Shiner shows. Most of the time I was just referring to these old MP3’s you had up on your old download site: http://el1011.com/Bootlist_3.html

There’s some shows from The Life And Times on there also that I’ve been looking for, and I’ve asked about them, or bugged you about them. I’m sorry man.

  7. darshun says:

Oh, “the list” you’re referring to are Brett Wilms recordings. I’ll have to check when I’m home the other HDDs to see if I have them still. Don’t be sorry, I put the list up there for a reason for requests, you’re not bugging me. I’ll try to bring them with me this Friday to campus to upload on server speeds.

Thank you! Thank you so much! Thank you so much for everything! For all you’ve done! For all your still doing! You’ve introduced me to new music, to new bands, that honestly I really don’t think I would of ever gave the time of day otherwise. For some reason, I’m still not really sure why. But anyways, like, for instance, I get really into a band, and it gets really hard to listen to anything else but that single band. You know, well at least until I’ve worn it out for myself, which is never a good thing to let happen either.

When I found and fell in love with Shiner, through my total and complete Hum obsession, I couldn’t listen to anything else. But at one point I started to notice that we liked a lot of the same type of music, a lot of the same type of bands, and you had all these live shows for Houston up for download on here. I don’t know why man but I had a feeling, that if you liked them that much, then I probably would too.

So I downloaded them, all of them, without ever hearing Houston’s studio albums, or anything they ”officially” released, and without hearing any of those shows until I was done downloading them all. I’ve never done that with a band before. You know, man, I was born in the May of ’88, lol! So I missed out on all the bands, on all the music, that I would grow up to fall in love with, and wish I could of been a part of.

(Though recently I did realize/learn that I did get to see The Life And Times back in I think ’06 when they came to Portland, OR and played at a venue called The Nocturnal. They were on tour with Sparta at the time, and I was there to see Sparta. But I remember really liking the 2nd band that played, but I didn’t catch there name. At the time I think that I was going to look into it later on, to find out who they were. But I guess I just forgot about it. Well it turns out that 2nd band that played was The Life And Times! After learning that, I now really wish I had brought in my video camera. It was in the car, I could of brought it in, after getting there though I just didn’t feel comfortable about it anymore. I regret it now though. It was a small venue, I could of asked to see if it was okay. Wish I did.)

Anyways, I ended up falling in love with Houston just about as bad, or maybe even worse, then I did with Hum, Shiner, and The Life And Times. So I really just wanted to say thank you for that. I’m sorry that this turned into a long read for a comment. But just saying thank you wasn’t enough, I wanted to try to explain to you why I’m thankful. If it weren’t for fans like you, I would of never been able to hear any of my favorite bands play live, and especially to the extent that I get to with bands like Hum, Houston, Shiner, and The Life And Times. But not only that, most of the bands that I love, that love grew from hearing there live shows, from hearing them play live. Bands like Hum, Shiner, Houston, and The Life And Times, they all play soo much better live then they sound on there studio releases.

So anyways man, I just wanted to say thank you for everything!
